Getting Fixed

Wow … I’ve so much to catch up on here, not least the conclusion to the 2014 #RunAugustRun adventure – which by the way was supported fantastically well by both the amount of miles completed (more on that in my next post) but also with the Pounds (and dollars) in generously donated.

Anyway … one thing that became obviously (and very painfully) clear was the fact that I needed to seriously consider getting myself fixed. You see for the past 18 months I’ve been running while injured … Stupid I know, idiotic even .. There were two main reasons for this (well three actually)

  1. I hate anything to do with Doctors .. I’m convinced that they are going to tie me down before poking and prodding me. Thankfully I’m generally a well person so have had limited need to visit them over the years. I live opposite a Health Clinic and I reckon they peer out of their blinds getting ready to snag me with a dog collar and pull me into a room for much prodding.
  2. When I ran the problem seemed to go away. Yup, after about 5 miles of running the problem cleared up and I felt pretty much pain free. The following day it was back and the longer I left running out of my daily plan the more painful the problem became.
  3. I hate anything to do with Doctors …

So after #RunAugustRun (where sadly I was only able to complete 1 mile per day) I realised that the pain was so severe that it was actually impacting my ability to even walk around. Time to face my fears head on and get myself fixed.

I’m currently in a 12 week program to help solve Tendo-Achiles Tendinosis … my goodness me it’s bloody painful when he is working it. So for the rest of the year I’m out of running … in fact right now I’m out of most things fitness related, which is actually really starting to bug me a little. I’ll hopefully be able to get on the bike over the next few weeks. I may even use the time out of running to get to swimming pool.

I’ve got plenty of crazy plans in my head for 2015 so I really want to give myself the best opportunity to get properly fixed over the rest of 2014. I’ll keep you posted with my progress (and prodding)

#RunAugustRun End of Week1 Status Report

Well #RunAugustRun is back and I was so happy to see over double the number of runners and walkers that we had last year. Looks like we have 46 folks who have agreed to attempt this challenge.

It’s been fantastic to get everyone’s daily updates  – you lot really are going great guns.

Well so far I have confirmed for at least 1 mile per day from over 20 folks – I know this number will rise as more confirmed totals come in.  At present, with the miles I have confirmed, we have run just over 650miles between us. As you can see from the map below this would take us to the Austrian border. Fantastic and we are well on the way to smashing our total of 2300 miles from last year.

Some highlights from the first week

  •  We had two Ultra runners contributing … Amanda Bashford who ran 40 miles and Dave Fawkner who managed 140 miles in a C2C challenge – 70 miles each day.
  • Everyone has run more than 1 mile on at least one of their days – you see it’s not so difficult to get up and out there people – well done.
  • Our top 3 runners in regards to total miles are, Dave Fawkner (155), Amanada Bashford (59) and Claire Aitkin (39)
  • Our runners are as far flung as South America with JoJo (our main main from last year) running and walking his way through Mexico

It’s top work from everyone so far …. from past experience the challenge really starts to get tougher from here on in as we enter the second week (especially as the weather perhaps starts to look a little damper). With no further Ultras (I don’t think) planned from anyone on the list we will all need to step up if we are to keep our plan for breaking 2300 miles … I know you can do it.

September So Soon?

Didn’t that Go Quick 🙂 August I mean …. I’m sure there are a few of you out there who are disagreeing right now – especially those who managed to commit and stick to running every single day in August.

Well you can now take a seat, relax those weary legs – the challenge has officially come to an end. So how did we all do?

  • In total as a group we ran 2300 miles
  • 29 runners and walkers lined up on the start line on August 1st.
  • From our runners (20) an pretty amazing total of 8 of us managed to stick to 100%
  • From our walkers (9) 6 managed to stick to 100% (although this could be as high as 8 depending on some last minute totals.
  • Despite this being a 100% challenge those who missed a day here and there still, I think they would agree, have laid more miles down in August than at any previous point before – so for that an amazing achievement as well.
  • Our longest day was actually the last day (even that in itself is a tremendous effort) with just over 140 miles being ran or walked. Smashing effort folks.
  • Fastest mile goes to the speedster Lynne who cracked open a 6 minute 34 mile. I warned her that if she went any faster there may be a rift in the Space Time Continuum.
  • Longest miles on a single day was held by Ruth (a 40 mile ultra).
  • Top three folks in terms of total miles went to Jojo (298, including a marathon just for kicks on his last day), myself (181) and Emily (152). All 100% folks managed to break over 50 miles  which just shows that despite the challenge being a mile a day at least, folks were doing more than this. Cracking Stuff.

With 2300 miles under our belt we as a group would have reached the border of Iran (heading East), Mali (heading South) and if we had headed North, well let’s just say we would have been a tad chilly.

And now the important stuff. You have ran and walked, mostly with a smile on your face, for a month – what’s it all worth to the Great Apes? Well as you know at the beginning of this month I said I’d donate a certain amount to my chosen charity Orangutan Appeal  – and that time has come.

I’m pleased to say that all of your efforts have meant that I’ll be sticking an extra £300 into the appeal which takes my running total (excuse the pun) to almost £1700  !!  Thank you so much. This Charity and the work they do is very close to my heart and each and every penny of this £300 comes from each and every one of you. Amazing effort.

So pleased so many of you came along for the run and for those who managed to stick out for every day – truly amazing.  Expect some video / photo footage to be produced soon 🙂 Yes I have been collecting some of the photos and movie footage you have sent me 🙂

And now for me it’s back to normal training – two events left this year. The Cambridge Ultra (45 miles) on the 26th September and then a week later the Round Ripon Ultra (35 miles – hopefully not 40 after getting lost last year). Still places available in both if you want to enter 🙂

As a final recap the total miles are below – some of these may increase by a few miles here and there but I think I’m pretty much all caught up.

Run August Run – Nearing The Finish Line

Goodness me, only three days to go (including today) in our #RunAugustRun Challenge. Can you believe (if you are still with us) that you have managed to run on 28 consecutive days – that is just amazing !

Last post left us in Romania, and today I pleased to report that we have almost cleared the Black Sea and are close to the coastal shores of Turkey. That is pretty amazing folks – we are in fact as a group less than 50 miles from Turkey which would take us to 2000 miles !!!!

So how many are left at 100%? Well I have to sadly report that since our last update a number have missed at least one day – never fear though they continue to run on for the project adding important miles to our journey. The drop rate proves two things, just how difficult a commitment it can be to run every day for a whole month, and of course in doing so how extra amazing those are who are have kept it up.

Some extra statistics for you

  • 1955 miles to date (this figure will increase as I know there are a few to check in from previous days)
  • Longest day to date is now the 24th when we clocked up just over 105 miles. It would have been more but a few of our long runners had the following day down as their long run.
  • Our longest weekend was this past weekend when we clocked up an amazing 195 miles
  • We had our fastest mile challenge and for those who have reported in I can announce that this prize goes to the speedster Lynne Anderson – a 6min 34 seconds (verified by picture).
  • A number of us have broken through the 100 miler marker, and even those who said at the start would be running a mile per day are nearing (or have already) broken 50 miles – that’s more than 1 mile a day so just fantastic !!
  • The crazy French Man Jojo continues to streak ahead with some amazing running and a grand total so far of 236 miles (with a few days of confirmation still to come!) Amazing mate, simply amazing !

So as we near the end of the challenge I wonder how everyone is doing – perhaps posting a little chart will help to motivate everyone to crack on and reach certain targets.

As you can see a number of us are close to certain milestones, 50 miles, 150 miles and even 200 miles … 3 days to go 🙂

All I have to say is how impressed I am with everyones commitment – even those who for one reason or another have had to miss a day or two. The important thing is that you started, and you continue to run, which in turn will add a few extra $$ onto the totals for my charity and that after all is what this is all about.

So there you go – 3 days to go, the next (and final update) will be upon completion. Please take a check on the numbers above and let me know if you think I’m wide of the mark with you total – it’s been a challenge in itself to keep up with everyone.

Run August Run – Reaching The Half Way Point

The Half Way Point Already, So Soon? WOW that went quick didn’t it 🙂

Well I’m sure some of us partaking in the #runaugustrun challenge are perhaps thinking a little differently but nonetheless we have made it to the half way point – and I’m pleased to report that most runners who started are still plodding on. We have had a few injuries along the way which has forced a few folks to pull out – but just like those left behind on the beaches after war, we will not forget you .. we will speak of you when we reach the promised land (err I mean September)

Anyway, so how as a group are we doing? Well in one word Bloody Fantastic (I was never that great at counting)

So far (and this number will increase as I know I’m missing a few check-ins from day15)

  • 1073 miles in total (or close to 50 marathons !!!) We not only broke 1000 miles but 50 marathons … wow !
  • Our furtherest single day runner is still the Super Awesome Ruth Goddard McWilliams (40 miles)
  • On day 13 we had our first runner pass 100 miles, take a bow Jojo Bombardo (he also makes some videos of his runs and listens to thrash metal – pretty rock and roll)
  • Despite the challenge asking for only 1 mile per day to qualify we as a group are averaging 3 miles per day.
  • Most miles run on a single day is still 3rd (100.58 miles)

Plotting our miles total on our “let’s all jump in The Great Ape Flying machine and fly east” tour … we would have passed through 6 different countries (and now in our 7th). Welcome everyone to Romania, or to be more specific just outside Zalau. Not sure there is too much to see here so just a quick bio break me thinks .. pick-up some food and push on. For the more observant amongst you, you may have noticed that I’ve changed the path of our plotted route. Instead of a direct east course we are flying south east – this has nothing to do with the fact that one day Nicola and I have hope to backpack around the world and I’m seeing how long it would take me (and the miles per day) to reach one of our first planned destinations in Asia 🙂 It was Alistair Reids fault for suggesting running to Singapore – honest. Actually if you want a spot of inspiration a fantastic book I recommend is Just a Little Run Around the World.

Speed Week (19th – 23rd August) 

As per my previous post it’s time to set a few challenges, the first of which will be our speed week. I had originally said a speed day, but given people are training for other things outside of #runaugustrun it may be impossible to get enough folks to run a fast mile on the same day. So the challenge now is to get you to set your best time for 1 mile. The only two stipulations are that you need to run it at some point between 19th-23rd August and that you need to post me a photo of evidence … Fastest time posted gets a nice little surprise at the end of the challenge (honest the surprise isn’t some sick joke like you have to run an extra day on September 1st … unless you want to of course)

Longest Day Challenge (Saturday 24th August) 

So our longest day to date has been the 3rd when we ran as a group just over 100 miles. We have come close on a few occasions since then and I’m hoping we can not only beat it but also push on – 150 perhaps? Typically folks are running longer at the weekends so it makes sense to have the challenge on that day. So 24th August if you are planning on running 1 mile .. try 2 miles .. If you are planning your long run … fancy going an extra mile or two just for (errr) fun? I’m sure as a group we can get to our target of 150 miles – in fact I have confidence in you lot – we can smash it 🙂

The Great Beer Meet-up

No date yet in the diary but I’ve put 3 Sundays out there on a  poll. Appreciate if you could go there and select which day works. I’ve plumped for a Sunday lunch slot. Partners of course invited and apologies in advance for those who are running far away places – had to go with the majority. I think we will all enjoy a beer and some tasty food and a chance to meet up with others who took part in the challenge.

Google Hangout

Speaking of meet-ups, the geek in me would love to hold a Google Hangout before the end of the month – more details on this soon but it would most likely be a week night, around 9pm (giving everyone ample opportunity to get their mile in, put the kids to bed and settle down for a bit of geeking out)

Right enough rambling from me … even though it’s 5.30am I’m thinking of getting out there and putting in my mile very soon (only a mile today as I have two Long Runs planned this weekend as I ramp up my training for the inaugural Cambridge Monster Ultra.) It’s been an awesome first half of the month – everyone who has taken part is amazing and for those still going every day – I’m so bloody proud of you all, stirling work.

Run August Run – 5 Day Update

Wow … in fact WOW ! So many people, including a lot of folks who would not normally class themselves as runners have been checking in to confirm their runs – although we say at least a mile, most folks have covered more than this on at least a few occasions. Well done to each and every one of you who have taken this challenge on.

Some basic stats

  • We started with 31 runners
  • At the time of writing 18 have confirmed daily runs (I expect this to rise as a number of folks only check in every few days and give me several days of updates)
  • So far (1st – 5th August) for confirmed runs we have a total of 367 miles (or 14.1 marathons in old money)
  • Our biggest milage day so far was 96 (2nd) …
  • Our longest day runner so far was the amazing Ruth Goddard-McWilliams who managed a staggering 40 miles as part of her Grim Reaper Ultra – well done that girl I don’t think anyone will top that
  • Our top three runners in terms of total miles covered so far (confirmed check-ins) is Ruth (42), myself (27) and Dave Fawnker (20)

So just how far is 367 miles … well if we all left Cambridge in a big crazy flying machine (which would be full of ice cream and cider) and headed east … we would currently be having a little pit stop in Minden (Germany). Find out more about this place here. Have a little bit of an explore, perhaps dip your aching toes into the River Weser, but don’t stay too long – the Big Monkey Flying machine is rumbling up her engines .. we be putting some more miles down over the next few days as we continue our journey east 🙂

So what’s next ? Well in the next few days I’ll put together all the stats and publish. This event was never about competition … but I’m sure there will be a few of us who use it as further motivation to get out there and run.

Also how about a few little friendly competitions .

  • Around the middle of the month (and making sure to give everyone plenty of notice) we will have a fastest mile competition
  • How about to see who takes the prize for the most miles per day
  • Then of course we have to have a prize for the craziest running related story and/or picture during your training (we really want to see those pictures)
  • And of course our biggest day to date is 96 miles … we will try and push beyond that .. do you think we could break 150? (again plenty of notice that it will be our long day together run)
